Three Video Games That Were Adapted From Books

Hello world! Cecilio posted a video where he spoke about film adaptations of books, but did you know some books have been adapted into video game form? Movie adaptations can experience struggles as film is a passive medium with a time limit; the audience doesn’t need to do anything to have the movie progress and most films are limited to 90-120 minutes. Video games are meant to be interacted with and put down so you don’t have to worry about how long it takes for a consumer to finish a game (we don’t need to talk about the 200+ hours I invested in the latest Pokemon game) so publishers don’t have to be as worried about cutting out important details like movies do.

    THE WITCHER 3: WILD HUNT

Based off of The Witcher series by Andrzej Sapkowski (1994)

I know Cecilio mentioned The Witcher being adapted from a book into a Netflix series, but did you know that it was first adapted into a game? The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is the latest game in a series of action-RPGs where you play as Geralt of Rivia. Play through an epic story where you search for your loved ones, fight mythical creatures, and explore new cities and towns in a world torn apart by war. The open world gives the players the ability to really learn and dig deeper into the lore of The Witcher compared to the Neflix series, and you can still play The Witcher 3 on all major gaming systems.

    CALL OF CTHULHU

Based off of Call of Cthulhu by H. P. Lovecraft (1928)

Switching gears from fantasy to horror, Call of Cthulhu forces you to play through the famous short story by H.P. Lovecraft. You play as P.I. Edward Pierce as you were assigned to look into the suspicious deaths in Arkham Mansion. Sneak around, find clues, and try to figure out what happened while trying to keep your sanity in check. The visuals and art style this game has really brings the classic Lovecraft story to life on all major gaming systems.

    SPEC OPS: THE LINE

Based off of Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad

Shooters tend to get a bad reputation on being mindless glorification of war, but Spec Ops: The Line turns that concept upside down as it’s a modern adaptation of Heart of Darkness. You play as Walker, a soldier being dropped into Dubai to extract Konrad, the leader of an ally battalion. You need to shoot your way through enemies while trying to keep your sanity until your mission is complete Good pacing, character development, and an interesting story really makes this shooter stand out. This is a slightly older game, but you can still play it on the PS3, X Box 360, and Steam.
